What about profiting off of peoples desire to excel and thrive? Perhaps a model of being paid for wellness over strictly healing severe cases.

Just ideas on how we might make our way in this world.

to profit off of peoples desire to excel and thrive? Just kinda say that again to your self... Why would I wish to profit off off some ones desires to be well, to thrive or excel?
To profit originally meant to move forward. moving forward at the expense of someone else is not a syngergistic or mutalistic relationship dynamic. The concept of payment alone creates a huge block. There can however be exchange with out payment... this is something that needs to be explored more within communities. Gift economies for example are doing this. We can make our way in this world in a non exploitative manner. It is difficult as an animist to perpetuate a relationship dynamic based on "use", "ownership" and "payment".

That is very true. The difficult point seems to be either trying to transition out of this society or walk in both worlds.

I have always been a horrible business man. I have lost money on so many jobs doing carpentry, because why would I want to profit off of someones desire to have a home or to fix something that doesn't work on their current home. I never did get that and still don't. I do profit off of others needs and desires though in these circumstances.

It creates real problems though like you say. I feel a block in my ability to progress and thrive in the ways I feel drawn to. This is perhaps on purpose?

Its true the transition is difficult. The encouraging thing is that entire communities are attempting to make that transition. Theres a book called transition culture I believe. On evolver there are groups that are trying to promote and start gift economies. This is very encouraging. It takes creating community, and attempting to fulfill needs collectively, cooperatively through mutalistic ways. I am no good at making a living honestly, the ethical considerations of making a living in this culture some times are just too hard. But I think at this point until more momentum is made one can do so while keeping a foot in both worlds so to speak.
What I have seen at the cob cottage company and at ecovillages has been very encouraging.

I think we share the same block... but whats holding you back is whats setting you free after all!

The block may be a case of a fully functioning, healthy system as opposed to some kind of problem or deficiency.

I attend class in a toxic building where the carpet glue gets to me sometimes and literally makes me sick. At first I felt bad as if something were wrong with me or as if I were oversensitive. I then began to realize that I was perfectly fine and that the students whose systems were not alerting them to the dangers were actually the ones who were ill.

Many times what we see as blocks or nuisances to be gotten rid of are actually valuable pieces to the process.

exactly! perfect example!
I work with drug addicts, the mentally ill, the homeless, often time what I am seeing in those populations are people with great sensitivity, so much so that they require a simpler way of life. unfortunately that way of life is often not available to them and so they struggle and suffer greatly.

This was wonderful! I work with my community doing rituals and much of what we do is healing work. I work hard for them, and they know it. But rather than getting paid, we often exchange gifts. I feel like we are developing a gift economy. An old indo european concept is that of Xartus or the idea of giving a gift for a gift in a sacred exchange. My challenge has been to learn to accept gifts gracefully and gratefully as well as remembering to give them too!

Thats wonderful and a perfect example of what I am talking about here!

my pleasure.

I love the topic, unfortunately I just don't quite get it. This seems to be the case for many people, even those who want to understand. I have tried my darndest to get it and it still doesn't sink in.

I do get it of course on a certain level and it is on that simple level that is spoken of in the videos, it is on a instinctive level, just don't ask me to explain, teach or produce some kind of academic treatise. I wish I could get it on that level too. One day perhaps I will.

well where are you hung up?

t23 said...

Well . . . it definitely is the cognitive understanding of the gifting model of economics. I get it intuitively and I get it very clearly . . . I guess that a hang up is caring that I get it cognitively.

I want to be able to explain it to people. I guess that it's frustrating too, because I do get it, but can't explain it.

I guess writing a paper or article on it would help me out in that area.

ever been to burning man? I have not myself. but i think one of the most amazing things there is that its all gift economy there. People go there and see that, participate in that and it really has an effect on them.I am going to be spending some real time looking at this gift economy. I find it very inspiring.

I have not been, though in my early 20s (developing adult years) I lived in Santa Cruz, CA. I was immersed in a gift economy like you wouldn't believe. That, I am sure is why I get it intuitive/instinctually so easily. I have experienced it, it's been a while though. I have always wanted to go to burning man or a gathering, just to see how it all goes down logistically, I just never get there.

Yeah, this is an inspiring topic. I've done several papers on localizing food and other needs, which is closely related to this topic. When we localize, tons of issues get addressed and potentially solved. I will pass on anything on the topic that seems worth checking out.

I look forward to seeing what you find here on the blog.
